The 5th annual Trot to the Beach
was held on June 1, 2008. Registrations were
up this year with 272 cyclists, walkers and
runners. Of those, 126 were registered in
the 5km race, 85 were in the ½ marathon race
and 61 cyclists took part. The walkers in
the ½ marathon event totaled 27,
significantly more than previous years. The
weather was custom made for a beach and
running event; not too hot and not too cold.
The finish line crowd was in no hurry to
leave as things were just right.
The event is held to raise funds and
interest in developing recreational trails.
This year’s event raised $10,500. This money
will be spent on a crushed stone trail in
Blenheim and in Erieau.
Colin McEachran and Olivia Flook of Blenheim
won the 5km race. McEachran won the men’s
division in 19 minutes, followed by Joey
Heathcote of London with 19:54 and
Thamesville’s Joe Fisher with 20:17.
Flook won the women’s division in 22:25.
Next were Renee Harrison of Merlin in 23:44
and Blenheim’s Laura Montgomery in 25:01.
Alain Jacques of Kitchener won the men’s ½
marathon race in 1:25:01. Roy Burd of
Chatham was second in 1:33:10 and Noah
Katzman of Chatham was third in 1:35:04.
